project type
Inspired by playing games around a big table with my family, especially Five Crowns. Other games had art styles that I enjoyed so I decided to redesign one our favorite games into a new style while keeping it true to the original. Its game play is based on a classic card game with modern updates. I used that as a jumping off point to create a retro inspired design with modern elements.
goals
Recognizable
Personality
keep the same color palette and visuals for consumers to recognize as the same game they already love
lean into the tag line "the game isn't over 'til the kings go wild" by adding playful illustrations and typography
Look back
Appeal
design packaging that reminds viewers of retro style with modern elements similar to the play style
create illustrations that are visual appealing and interesting mini art pieces themselves
Original Packaging
Staying True to the Original
Keeping the same color pallet, purple and gold, and individual colors for each suite helped keep the redesign true to the original box and cards. Adding a cream color to replace the white background of the cards softens the geometric visuals and leans into the vintage illustration style.
Making it My Own
Using the tag line "The game isn't over until the Kings go Wild" to inspire the illustration style, each suite's face cards has its own unique expression. Creating each face card was a challenge to differentiate between king, queen, and jack of the same suite. I referenced classic playing cards with the type and size of head dress for them while still keeping within the simple geometric illustration style.
Style Inspiration
Five Crowns is a game that many families enjoy and now it has a visual style to match to feelings it gives. The wild faces and layouts for each number card reflect the tagline but keeps true to the original box. Consumers that already know the game will still be able to recognize it as their favorite games they know and love.
